A concept version of a hatchback 208, which is equipped with a hybrid power plant, is capable of operating on compressed air. The prototype, called Hybrid Air, is a response to the problem of the French government to build cars at a rate of not more than two liters of fuel per hundred kilometers.

Engineers of Peugeot Company replaced most of the steel parts in the construction of a hatchback, including floor panels and tailgate on the composite and aluminum. As a result, a curb weight of the car, built on the basis of the standard Peugeot 208 with 1.2 engine, has dropped from 960 to 860 kilograms.

The structure of the power plant entered upgraded gasoline engine 1.2, which became four percent more economical compressed air tank, located under the boot floor, hydraulic pumps and a special transmission with planetary gear.
It is assumed that the first “air” hybrids will be ready for mass production in 2016.
